Greenville Drive Baseball

To millions of sports fans around the country, it wouldnt be summer without baseball. Fans that live in large cities can enjoy watching their favorite Major League Baseball teams play. Those in smaller cities can watch promising young players develop their talents on minor league teams. Baseball fans in the Greenville, South Carolina area support the minor league Greenville Drive, the citys South Atlantic League team.

The Greenville Drive is a Class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox organization. The team played its inaugural season in Greenville in 2006. The Greenville Drive plays 13 other minor league teams in the South Atlantic League (SAL), including Charleston, Asheville, Augusta, Savannah, and Greensboro. The Drive is currently in 2nd place in the SAL Southern standings, with plenty more games to play in the 2011 season. Since 2006 a number of talented Drive players have gone on to play in the Major Leagues.

The Drive plays their home games at Fluor Field at the West End in downtown Greenville. The stadium is modeled after Bostons Fenway Park, and even has its own version of the Green Monster, a 30 foot high wall in left field. In 2007 Fluor Field underwent $1.5 million in enhancements to make the fans experience more enjoyable. Additions included Heritage Plaza, the Picnic Plateau, and a playground near the stadiums lawn seating. Greenville fans are able to enjoy the games from traditional seating as well as lawn seating from the stadiums grassy bank. A number of special perks encourage fans to come out and watch a game. On Thursdays the stadium offers the popular $1 Drink Nights. Pepsi fountain drinks are $1, and there are also draft specials in the 500 Club. Friday Night Fireworks are scheduled after every Friday home game.

Ticket prices are very reasonable, and the entire family can enjoy the game for less than a single ticket price at many Major League games. Single game tickets purchased in advance cost $8 for Box Seats, $7 for Reserved Seats, $6 for Reserved Terrace, and $5 for Lawn and Deck Seating. Same day game tickets cost $1 more than the advanced tickets. Fluor Field is located at 945 S. Main Street in downtown Greenville. Free parking is available at County Square, which is a ten minute walk from the stadium. Fans may ride the complimentary shuttle that runs between County Square and Fluor Field. Free valet parking for the handicapped is available at the stadiums Main Street Gate.

There are still many home games left to be played this season. Baseball fans should plan to come downtown and attend a Greenville Drive game.
